President Obama & Congress: Tax US!

In the State of the Union address, President Obama called for strengthening tax benefits for middle class and low-income working families, and for investing more in child care, early education, and higher education, including making the first two years of community college free. Responsible Wealth is gathering signatures in support of the President's plan.

¿Qué significó el 15 de abril para usted? Bueno, por un lado, era el día límite para rendir su declaración de impuestos. Aunque para muchos pueda representar el muy común ritual norteamericano de entregar (a regañadientes) al gobierno sus ingresos, los que se ha ganado trabajando duramente, para nosotros en Unidos por una Economía Justa (United for a Fair Economy – UFE), es una oportunidad. Muy simplemente, es una oportunidad de hablar acerca de por qué los impuestos (y el crucial sector público, para el cual proporcionan una base y un sustento constante) son importantes.

En Unidos por una Economía Justa (“United for a Fair Economy”) creemos que organizar a los trabajadores de bajos salarios está a la vanguardia de la lucha por la justicia económica. Como se explica en nuestros principios rectores, "un empleo digno con un salario digno, donde los trabajadores tengan el derecho democrático a organizarse y compartan la riqueza producida por su trabajo", es el núcleo de una economía justa.

Inequality and continued racial segregation create toxic soup

The toxic mix of extreme inequality and continued racial segregation pushes people of color into communities of concentrated poverty. The "free-market" has completely failed these communities as they are by-passed by full-service banks, high-speed internet, grocery stores with healthy food, and jobs with benefits that pay a living wage. Bold action, led by a government accountable to working people, is required to break up such concentrated poverty.

Ezra Klein of the Washington Post calls it "perhaps the single best economic speech of his presidency." The folks on Fox News were whining about "redistribution." Picking up a cab in Baltimore the next morning, the first thing the driver asked me was whether I saw the President's speech… He loved it. However one ranks it, Pres. Obama's speech on Wednesday nailed it, calling economic inequality the "defining challenge of our time."
